Salman Khan has gone a step further. He has put his head on the chopping block by campaigning for candidates from two rival parties - the BJP and the Congress. And here's how he did it.
Salman Khan struck his name off Sanjay Dutt's list of friends by turning a blind eye to Sanjay's support of Samajwadi Party candidate Abu Asim Azmi. Instead, he went campaigning for Priya Dutt. Dressed in a white sweatshirt, white-rimmed shades and a ponytail, Salman rode in an open van with the Congress MP in Mumbai's North Central constituency.
Salman also took nearly three hours out of his schedule to give his thumbs up to Milind Deora, the Congress candidate from South Mumbai constituency. Clad in a green T-shirt this time, the actor brought traffic to a standstill in the bylanes of Bhendi Bazaar and Nagpada.
He made his support for the Congress crystal clear when, a little while earlier, he campaigned for Congress candidate Anu Tandon in Unnao, UP, and went so far as to declare that Rahul Gandhi was India's future leader.
But we think his brains were addled by too much time in the sun. Why? Well, because on April 11, Salman went all out to support Bollywood star and BJP nominee, Vinod Khanna, in Gurdaspur, Punjab!
Is he trying to bring about a hung Parliament single-handedly? Salman needs to hire a political consultant. Pronto.
In a surprising reversal of trend, Bollywood males did more skin show in films than their female counterparts in the year 2008.
Step aside all you sexy sirens. Your cleavages, midriffs and bouncy bums hardly make for titillating stuff on Bollywood celluloid anymore. Guys with rippling muscles, 6-pack abs and masculine butts have been in constant focus ever since the trail was blazed at the fag end of 2007 when Shahrukh Khan went shirtless for the first time in Om Shanti Om and Ranbir Kapoor did the towel dance and even exposed his bare butt to the camera in Saawariya .
2008 saw the bar of male nudity raised several notches higher by the likes of John Abraham , Akshay Kumar and Aamir Khan.
John, who is doubtlessly an object of fantasy among his female (and male) fans, set a new milestone by not just baring his enviable bust, but also giving a peek of his hipline by pulling down his trunks to the limits Censorship would allow in the Karan Johar production Dostana . The movie, a light-hearted spoof on gay relationships, made both its stars – John and Abhishek Bachchan – iconic figures among the gay community. It also became one of the reasons for John to be chosen as the Sexiest Asian Male by a UK-based daily.
The most surprising strip-down of the year, however, was from Akshay Kumar , the actor who doesn’t believe in pumping iron in gymnasium or using myoplexes or other chemical substances to build his body. For the first time in his career, Akshay surprised his fans by going shirtless and exposing his finely shaved chest to the flashing cameras as he posed seductively with a sexy siren at the launch of a denim jeans. One pose even had the naughty girl extending her hand from behind Akshay and unbuttoning his low-waist jeans. That the otherwise conservative Akshay indulged in something as steamy as this goes to show the acceptability male nudity has acquired in Indian society. A few years ago, it would have raised tempers. Today, it only raises the brows of Akshay’s female fans.
However, the most symbolic skin show of the year comes from Aamir Khan , who trained mercilessly for over a year to develop a beefcake that has left many people – including good friend Sachin Tendulkar – flummoxed. Aamir, who doesn’t do anything without reason, has willy-nilly sparked off a new style statement among youth with his by-now-famous Ghajini haircut, which – believe it or not – had to be banned in some colleges because too many students were copying it, and the unique hairdo became a distraction for the studious collegians. Meanwhile, Aamir’s well-sculpted bust has made him the new pin-up boy of Bollywood.
Besides these three prominent stars, year 2008 also saw glimpses of partial nudity from the likes of Sohail Khan and Vatsal Seth (in Heroes ) and Ranbir Kapoor (in Bachna Ae Haseeno ).
And year 2009 will see John raising the bar still higher in the upcoming Yashraj Film New York in which he has gone Full Monty and wore not a thread of cloth on his body for a scene that, sadly, evokes more shock than titillation.
Now, that’s a pity!
Salman Khan broke his silence over the 26/11 attacks on Mumbai and spoke for the first time about Islam and terrorism. He said Islam doesn’t teach terrorism and Muslims should rather follow Quran than extremists. In a television interview he said,
“Islam mein toh yeh hai hi nahin… ya toh aap in terrorists ki baat suniye ya phir jo Rasool Allah (Prophet Mohammed) ne jo baatein sikhayi hain hadeeson mein aur jo Quran mein likha hai usey follow karein”
Criticizing the government like all the Bollywood actors have done in the past two weeks, he said -
“Jab buses aur trainon mein blast ho te thay everyone was going on with their normal regular life… ab jo yeh period hai unko aisa lag raha hai ke hum kahin par bhi safe nahin hain… ab government unki baatein sunegi - the powerful people who do not feel safe anymore… they will now take a stand… aur yeh achi baat hai… lekin yeh agar baat pehle ho jaati toh yeh naubath hi nahin aati.”
Salman also disapproved of the blame game India and Pakistan are playing after the attacks. He believes -
“Itna terrorism Pakistan mein khud ho raha hai… Benazir Bhutto maari gayi, Parvez Musharraf par kitne saare attacks hue hain… Marriott blast kardiya gaya… so this is not in control of even Pakistan. Main wahan ke newspapers toh pardhta nahin lekin agar wahan pe aisi koi ghatna hoti hai toh kya woh log bolte hain ke hindustaniyon ne kiya”
Talking about the Ram Gopal Varma’s controversial visit to Taj, Salman says,
“Picture ka set dekhne ke liye agar gaye hain toh woh toh bohot hi gadbad hai. Lekin agar woh saath mein thay aur he was concerned ke yeh kya hogaya I cant imagine this, then its fine.”

As usual Salman Khan was absent from the promotional events surrounding his latest movie Heroes that hits theatres this weekend.
Though his co-stars Sohail Khan, Sharman Joshi, Amrita Arora and Gul Panag have been busy promoting the film through the week, Salman has preferred to be behind the scenes on the marketing front
“My job is acting. People, fans know what to expect from a film, they will go and see it. I don’t believe in promoting a film,” says Salman.
Apart from the movie, it is Salman’s romantic life that keeps the gossip mills active. Latest buzz is about his impending split from girlfriend Katrina Kaif.
But Salman Khan denies this rumour and adds that Katrina Kaif’s simplicity keeps him besotted. “I love simple girls. Nice, simple, straight. I don’t like women who manipulate and scheme,” says the actor.
Another buzz is about him dancing shirtless, even at the age of 43. “We have grown up on disco dancing and those typical filmi struggling days so it is very difficult to adapt that body language but we have tried,” adds Salman.
Fans of Salman will see him again in 2008 in Subhash Ghai’s musical flick, with Yuvvraaj Katrina Kaif.
Refusing to call it a ‘war’, Salman Khan has nevertheless admitted that he and Shah Rukh Khan do have differences, and they can probably never be friends.

Yes, there is one scene in my house, which is shown as Priyanka’s house in the film.
You usually don’t work with debutante directors. How did you agree to do this film with Rumi?
Well, I do make exceptions. I also worked with Shrish Kunder in his first film. I’ve done several films in which Rumi was the writer. I was assured that he will make a good film.
People say you you are the most misunderstood guy in the industry...
I don’t give a damn. I am what I am. That’s the way I am, if you like it, then thank you very much, and well, if you don’t like it, sorry!
What about the war between you and Shah Rukh Khan?
It is totally unfair to label it as a war. We are different individuals and have different perspectives.

When I have never spoken about Vivek Oberoi, why should I speak about Shah Rukh?

You always have these idiots here and there talking rubbish. When their film is about to be released, woh chada-chada ke apni tareef karte hai. Shaurat aur izzat upperwale ke haath mein hai, jisne mujhe shaurat aur izzat di hai, usne mujhe taqat bhi di hai, aur koi meri taqaat mujhse nahih cheen sakta. Fark nahin padta. These people forget that there is one thing above all – the Almighty.
How is the industry supporting your organisation Being Human?
In terms of financial support, well, I have not received a single cheque till date from anybody from the film industry.

Salman Khan gets the chance to take God’s place in reel life, in upcoming movie, God Tussi Great Ho, but in real life he does not want that job, ever.
If given the chance, “ No, I would not take that chance,” he says and adds,” Everyone’s got their job to do. I have got a job as an actor. God has a job to be God.”
If forced to take up that job, he says,” I would not know what to do with it. I will have the power and I would be sitting at home or would be giving a shot in the movie somewhere. It would be a waste.”
Regarding his own faith, Salman had the following words,” I think a lot about God, but in a different way. In my mind, God is the creator, he is everything. He has made us and he lives in our hearts. Love is God. Faith is God. Trust is God. All these nice positive things in life are God. “
He also hopes for a life after death and his wish is that he is reborn with the same family.
